The Vere Foster Copy Book  and colour chart

For the colour chart, I used the shape of the letters found in the Vere
Foster copy books. Apart from the delightful little verses for children
to copy, this book shows the lower loops completed. This helps us to
integrate our emotional experiences as we go through life, so that our
journey may not be so rough or painful.

The Starting Strokes are very helpful when learning to write, the initial
preparation acts as a stabilizer, so that children know where they stand.
After the task of writing has been accomplished with a degree of rhythm,
then it would be a good idea to drop the Starting Strokes altogether, as
too much initial preparation will get in the way of being able to jump into

new tasks in a spontaneous way. It's a little like learning to ride a two wheeled
bike, we start off with stabilizers attached to the back of the frame until we've
got the hang of cycling and have learnt to keep a balance. When we can cycle
properly the stabilizers will only get in the way and slow us down.

The tendency towards narrowness can be unhealthy, as it shows we
have difficulty in communicating, we coop things up inside ourselves,
which makes us tense. Broader writing is more favorable as it allows
for a greater degree of expression in a more relaxed atmosphere. The
balanced middle zone is very healthy, as it indicates a sense of fulfillment.

NOTES ON THE LETTERS

b f h k l -all have loops in the upper zone and reach to the violet.
t d -are not as tall as the other upper zone letters, they reach into the indigo.
Also, these two letters have covering strokes in the upper zone.
i t -'i' dots and 't' bars are placed on the indigo.
p r s -these letters pierce into the indigo from the middle zone.
f g j y z --,. all of these letters reach down to the red and have loops.
p q -the 'p' and 'q' are not as extended as the other lower zone
letters. They reach down to the orange. The letter 'p' has a covering
stroke, so, mind your p's and q's.

Introduction to the Colour Chart

In this part of the book, we refer to the colour chart. In traditional
graphology the writing is divided into three zones. The upper zone for
the 'i' dots, 't' bars and the top of the 'L 's and 'H's etc. The middle
zone for the 'a's, 'o's, 'm's and 'n's etc. The lower zone is for the 'y'
and 'g' loops etc.

Graphologists have always related the upper zone to the intellect, the
middle zone to the social life, and the lower zone to the unconscious
part of ourselves.

When the three zones are sub-divided into seven zones, you will find
that there are three in the lower, two in the middle, and two at the top.

The ratio of the sizes of the seven zones are based on a mathematical
formula to do with the notes (do -ray -me etc.). As you will notice,
each note takes up a larger space as it goes up the scale. All except
the semi-tones, which will be smaller than the previous note. So,
going up the chart, starting from 'do', we have,  tone -tone- semi tone
-tone -tone -tone -semi tone. The notes 'me' and 'te' being semi tones,
take up a smaller space on the chart, compared with the previous tone.

When the respective ratio of sizes are drawn on paper (as in the chart),
we can see that the whole of the scale can be divided into three equal
sizes, ( upper zone, middle zone and lower zone). For those who are
more esoterically inclined, the chart shows how the law of three and
the law of seven are in correspondence with each other, and are in
perfect harmony.

It is very interesting to note that, out of all the numbers, three and
seven are usually considered to be the lucky ones.

When people are in harmony with themselves and feel balanced, they
unknowingly attract good fortune towards themselves, just as when a
person feels off key, they give out awkward vibes and the environment
responds back, making the person feel even more uncomfortable. When
a person creates harmony and balance in their inner space, it is only a
matter of time before it becomes manifest in their outer space or
environment. Haven't you noticed that when you are on good form and
'together', life flows smoothly for you, and when you are off key, the
whole world seems to fall apart around you.

The type of conscious and, therefore, activities we project into the
world, will determine the condition of our environment for better or
worse.

In the Western world, we have an inner disease called greed. It is
all too obvious how this is causing our environment to be very unhealthy
and, hence, unsafe for us all. If we have an attitude of giving to our
environment and the earth, instead of taking from it, then all of our basic
needs would have nourishment and we would create an atmosphere that
is very helpful to the development of further growth within us. We were
not put here to rape the earth, but to live in harmony with her and to
develop our potentiality to the full, so that we can be ready for the
next stage from our earthly existence.

I was living in Farnham  years ago, in a little upstairs room in a
little cottage. I was renting this room from Simon Wintle (another
Graphologist, he now has a great website all about playing cards).

One evening, while attempting to attend to my studies, I
noticed that there was a great deal of smoke coming up the stairs and
into the room. This smoke made it impossible for me to continue studying.

Upon going downstairs into the living room, I noticed that the fire was
burning badly. It was in the fire place, but the wind was blowing down
the chimney and the smoke was filling the room. Simon seemed to be
unaware of the smoke, as he was sitting on a stool with an artists' easel
in front of him, drawing lines on paper. After building up the fire and
letting the smoke out of the windows, I had a look at what Simon was
doing. He told me that the distance between the lines represented the
notes, 'do -ray -me' etc. and told me about the tones and semi-tones.
My first instinct, upon seeing this symmetrical arrangement of sizes,
was to color it in with the rainbow colors, with red at the bottom
for the base, and material, and violet at the top for the spiritual.

Simon coloured it in with water color paint. It was then that the chart
came alive and started to give us insights. We started to play around
with it, superimposing hand writing movements on the chart. The top
of the middle zone letters were in the blue zone. Blue is the color that
is associated with communication, as in writing letters, telephone bills,
and is the color most used in spiritualist churches to aid communication
from the loved ones on the other side. ' A's and 'O's that are open at
the top show that the writer is able to talk easily. This fitted in perfectly
with the map. As we were working with things that come in sevens, we
placed the chakra's, or energy centers, on the chart. Then the elements,
as they correspond to the chakras, along with the sense that is associated
with each element. As both of us had studied and tried to digest the
Indian way of thought from various holy books, this came quite easily
to us. The Bhagavad Gita or, in English, The Song of God, talked about
the three modes of material nature: Goodness, Passion and Ignorance. The
book describes how different people take to different stations of life,
depending on the mode of material nature they identify with most.

The Indian Caste system worked well for a period but, after a time,
people without the good qualities of a priest, would take up a priestly
position, and, this would cause havoc in the society  .Imagine a warrior
king-like person in the position of a priest. This is a recipe for a so-called
'Holy War', and is very unhealthy for all concerned.

For the purposes of graphology, it is good to see that we have a bit of
each station in life within each of us, which corresponds to the particular
energy that comes from the respective Chakra.

The primitive person will be concerned with the basic needs to keep
body and soul together. By primitive man, I don't mean those living in
jungles. Some of these people are Shamans, or priests, in their own
right, and have a good knowledge of medicine and understand how to
live in harmony with their surroundings. By primitive man, I mean that
part of us that tends to be a bit lazy and lethargic

A working class person is concerned with creation. Notice
how this ties in with the Chakra in the genital area. The creative aspect
of ourselves can give pleasure to others in what is produced.

Businessmen are a little more fiery. It is that part of us with the 'get up
and go'. In this zone the lower loops cross over on their way to the
middle zone. This brings creation out of the work place and into the
light of day. This is like the businessman's deal. It is interesting to see
that food is something we consume every day and, therefore, the
product most used in business. This also relates to the solar plexus
being in the area of the stomach. The Indians in this station of life
also farmed the land and protected their cows. Therefore, practically
the whole community would be vegetarian. It is interesting to see how,
in the last forty years or so, vegetarianism has spread from the East to
the West, and is very much on the increase.

If a king is to govern a country properly, he will need a big heart in
order to provide and give generously to all the various needs of society.
In ourselves, the end strokes along this zone show our degree of
generosity with an extension of the heart energies. It is also the part
of us that is able to overcome fear and be courageous in life.

Mahatma Ghandi

is a good example of a person who had the qualities of a saintly king.
He was very courageous and showed little fear, and had the welfare
of the people at heart. Not just one group, Hindu's, but the Muslims
as well. His heart was so large that he could care for all people, even
those different from himself. Also, with his speech, (the throat Chakra),
he was able to communicate his understanding to others.
When the middle zone is well developed, such writers know how to be
satisfied with themselves. When people feel that they have satisfaction
and inner contentment, it is only natural to give it out to others.
Only when people feel lacking in one respect or another, do they want
to take from others.

Priests had good qualities such as cleanliness, religiousness,
austerity, tolerance, honesty and wisdom. They lived simple lives with
little or no luxury. This helped them to be inward looking in order to
be honest with themselves. When people are honest with themselves, they
understand their true nature, which goes beyond appearances. This in
turn gives them the ability to see beyond appearances in other people,
into their inner nature. This is sometimes called the sixth sense.
The 'i' dots in writing Show the degree of observation within the
writer. Observation is necessary if you are to be honest with yourself.
The priests also understood the Correct application of willpower and
used it, not for self gain and amassing material goods, but for healing
others, Who would otherwise be out of balance, and raising the Con-
sciousness of others as well as teaching and encouraging others.
The 't' bars will Show the degree of willpower in the writer. How the
writer uses his willpower for good or ill will depend on his degree of
honesty with himself and his own conscience. There are two paths: one
that leads to balance and harmony within, and thus into balance and
harmony with the environment. This enables the writer to synchronize
with the divine plan which also is in balance and harmony. The other
path leads to imbalance and disharmony within self which, when
projected into the environment, causes an imbalance and disharmony in
our surroundings. This can be very dangerous not only for the writer
but for all mankind.

The saintly priests are very much like ordinary priests only saintlier.
They use the energy of intelligence to integrate themselves fully. Not
only are they in harmony with themselves and psychologically well
balanced, but they go beyond the need to be self reflective (beyond the
'i' dot). After going through the whole business of 'man, know thyself ,
they know who they are and what they are here for, The only thing
left is to get on with the job and not bother about superficial appearances.
Also such priests go beyond the need to project their own will into the
world (beyond the 't' bars). In one sense you could say that their
intent is impeccable.

In handwriting we can  see how the writers use their intelligence.
Whether they hold onto their ideas with little hooks, engage in
intellectual arguments with wedges or think they know it all with
arcades. Sometimes people will use their intelligence to Show
others that they are holy or religious, this is sometimes done with a flag.
Simon and myself stayed up until about six o'clock in the morning
checking and cross-checking the map with the information found in
various graphology books. The discovery was very exciting, as an under-
standing of why handwriting movements mean what they do, was
becoming very clear to us.

As Graphologists, we understood that the principles of graphology
were based on universal laws, i.e. that anyone with a particular hand-
writing movement would have (whatever the interpretation was) that
interpretation in common with other writers of the same handwriting
movement. Of course, it would be seen in a slightly different context,
depending on what the other handwriting movements were in the script,
or, in other words, the background.

However, what these universal laws were, our vision was clouded.
After stumbling across the map and meditating on the colors, these
laws became clear to us.

The universal laws put into the form of a map can give us a wealth of
information and depth of understanding when observing handwriting.
From the Western world we see religions in the form of patriarchal
rule with the male priests conducting services to God the Father. Also
we have early Celtic traditions as portrayed in Paganism where the
female priestess would take the lead and perform ceremonies to God the
Mother .

For quite some time now we have been used to patriarchal rule in
religion and world affairs. As we have seen, this causes an imbalance
due to our disregard for Mother Earth. Raping her until she is practically
exhausted and leaving someone else to clear up the mess.

There has been greater interest shown in crystals, universal peace
dancing and other Mother Earth related activities over the last few years
or so. The energy of Mother Earth is coming to the surface. People are
beginning to explore the unconscious realm on an individual level, thereby
learning to overcome previous fears. Externally there is a lot more to be
done. Armies are needed to be set in action to heal Mother Earth before
the people of this planet suffer even more.

Quite often, what we see going on around us is a reflection of how we
are, on a world-wide scale, or within our immediate environment. A
little reflection on this can give one a sense of direction.

The understanding of ourselves in relation to Mother Earth with all
her gifts, is just as important as using the intellect. These two aspects of
our nature need to work in an harmonious way if we are to have an
understanding of our potential in full.

With the eastern and western way of seeing, we find we have divisions
within our societies and within ourselves. If we take care of all these
divisions or colors, then we will find harmony within ourselves and
within the world.

Seven Zones

Here I would like to show how you can use the color chart. The
examples given can be found in most graphology books. All I have done
is to superimpose the examples on top of the color chart. Then, by way
of analogy, relating to colour, element, or sense etc.,one can have a clear
understanding of the handwriting movements in question.

The examples given are by no means the only ones. I am just using
them to show how this map can be used, so that in a situation where you
are seeing something in a person's handwriting that you don't under-
stand, it can sometimes become clear when using the symbology relating
to the zone in connection with the particular shape of the handwriting
movement.

The colour chart is a formula in itself. A little contemplation on the
colors, and what else corresponds to them will reveal different aspects
of the seven zones.

A little careful study and contemplation on your part, will reveal a
comprehensive method which you can use intuitively in many respects.
The following examples will show how this can be done.
